help help it's a heffalump....
it seems we live in increasingly scary times -
at the front of many people's minds at present are the unfolding tragedy on the US Gulf coast and the complete failure of the Bush presidency to see it as anything other than a threat to their continued political ascendency.....
then there is the threat from Islamist terrorists who want disintegrate us 'cos anyone who isn't actively with them is an enemy.....
and this morning a colleague told me about planning being undertaken by health trusts in the expectation that Avian flu may decimate health staff and cause an overwhelming demand for medical care, bringing the NHS to its knees..... "how should we in the voluntary sector respond?" he quite reasonably asks - "do we need a plan?" - to be honest I haven't got a clue - I don't know how to respond to unassessable risks.
"What else can go wrong?" we ask ourselves - and another part of us replies "well almost anything - just look at what has happened in the last year".
and what can we do about this surge of fear?
I'm buggered if I know...
(I just thought I'd share my feelings of helplessness with you)
