- the far north-west of Scotland – Ullapool and points north – remote, depopulated, friendly – the most beautiful place I’ve been
- Paxos and AntiPaxos – tiny islands south of Corfu - sea, no cars, friendliness, hospitality
- Morocco – beautiful, often poverty-stricken, freezing, hot, overwhelming, hospitable, exciting
- Iceland in summer – warm, wet and stunning
- Iceland in winter – cold, bright and stunning
- driving to Venice via France, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and back via Switzerland & France
