today...

Up to 800,000 "gypsies"/Roma were murdered by the Nazis — over a half of their European population at the time. Other groups believed by the Nazis to be "racially inferior" or "undesirable" included 6 million Poles killed, of whom 3 million were Christian, and the rest Jewish, up to 1.2 million Serbs killed, around half a million Bosniaks, many Russians and other Slavs, the mentally and physically disabled, homosexuals, Africans, Communists and other political enemies, trade unionists, Freemasons, and many non-conformist Christians and dissident clergy, were also killed. And of course as many as seven million Jewish people. Some authorities say that as many as 26 million "inferior" people were murdered by the Nazis ... source - wikipedia

Holocaust deniers deny these killings took place..
You and I probably would have been murdered by the Nazis...
There were many genocides prior to the Nazi Holocaust - although none as thorough and purposeful...
And appallingly there have been been many since, including the Khmer Rouge's 1970s reign of terror in Cambodia, the Bosnian and Rwandan genocides in the 90s, and the killings in the Dar fur region of Sudan that are going on now...
in memory of Sara

i didn't realise that it was holocaust memorial day, but now that i do i think its right to have such days to take stock, look back and remember just what people must have gone through.

we never learn though so it's so important to have a day to remind us - those of us who care can spread the word and try to get political commitment to stop current and prevent future atrocities..... Amnesty International is a good place to start to find out about murderous regimes and support victims.
